It was during graduate school in California that he began his career in competitive strength sports. He competed in his first powerlifting competition in 2000 and deadlifted 573 pounds as a junior while setting a record in the total. Again, balancing both school and the gym was a task always needed to be executed by Rob. He even began training as early as 5 a.m. in order to become the best powerlifter he could while continuing to perform at a high level in school. His goal of deadlifting 700 pounds before he left graduate school was almost achieved when he pulled 683 pounds at the Central California Championships in October 2002. During this time, Rob met his future wife and they were married in August 2002.
After obtaining his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry, Rob and his family re-located to the San Francisco Bay Area. He went to powerlifting Nationals in 2004 and placed in the top 10 in a highly competitive 125 kg class. During this time, Rob fulfilled a lifetime dream by assembling the necessary equipment for a private home training center.
In 2005, he competed in a local strongman competition. It was this competition that would change his athletic ambitions from being a world class powerlifter to being a world class strongman. He began training with Ricky LaRocca, whom he had known from powerlifting, and the world class strongman Jon Andersen.
